It's Christmaaaaaaas!

The festive season is here again.  Doesn't seem like 12 months since the last one, and we're back in the swing with mince pies, sparkly cards, wrapping paper, tinsel and lots of nonsense on the television. Family, friends, cold weather, woolly jumpers with reindeer on the front, and chocolate. Oh, the chocolate...

We've been celebrating our 40th anniversary this year, and it's entertaining to look back at what was going on in Christmas 1985.

Shakin' Stevens was number 1 in the charts, with 'Merry Christmas, everyone'

Christmas television - for those of us who remember them, these are absolute classics!

The Two Ronnies Christmas Special

There was also a Christmas special from Hi De Hi, but I can't find that on YouTube, which might be a good or bad thing depending on how you feel about Su Pollard...

Christmas food was a bit different in 1985 - popular foods were vol au vents, and garlic bread was a relatively new thing back then. Viennetta was all the rage, and if you were really trendy, you had kiwi fruit in your trifle. And you might well have been eating it from your Eternal Beau crockery.

Popular toys 40 years ago included Cabbage Patch dolls and Care Bears. Sylvanian Families were new on the market, and Trivial Pursuit was an addition to Christmas entertainment.

Happy anniversary from the Neuro Therapy Centre, we hope everyone's enjoyed the nostalgia.

Here are some more things to entertain you over the Christmas break.

Classic Christmas Television

Have a bit of a laugh with some much loved Christmas television.

One of my favourite Morecambe and Wise Christmas sketches - the one with Andre Previn.

The BBC has an entire page of Christmas specials available through iPlayer - there's something for everyone.

I like to settle down with a film when there's time to spare - The Muppet Christmas Carol, Love Actually, It’s A Wonderful Life, and Elf are among our favourite Christmas films. Or take yourself back to our Member Christmas Party and watch Nativity to enjoy the Sparkle and Shine song all over again.

The Nine Lessons and Carols from King's College, Cambridge is a much loved service, many people listen or watch on Christmas Eve. My family used to wrap the extended family's presents while this was on. The television version is here.

Jingle, Jingle!

A bit of Christmas music might help us get into the Christmas spirit. Here’s a selection of the most popular songs played in our cafe this December.

Slade – Merry Christmas

Walking in the Air - with Aled Jones wandering round the Welsh countryside

Bing Crosby – White Christmas - an absolute classic.

Wonderful Christmastime - Paul McCartney

Driving home for Christmas - Chris Rea

Rocking Around the Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee - I'll get up and dance to this one if there was enough sherry in the trifle.

Too much chocolate?

It's tempting to just sit and eat all sorts of things and not move around as much as we should.  Work off a bit of that chocolate orange with a few minutes' activity.

Strength and Flexibility

Seated exercises

Balance exercises

Feeling a bit low?

We know that Christmas might not be happy for everyone, and you might need someone to talk to. Here are some organisations that offer support over the Christmas period.

The leftovers...

Here are some tasty ideas for using up all that extra food - not just a turkey sandwich on Boxing Day. I've included one for leftover sprouts. I know what I'd do with them, but some people actually like sprouts.

And a message from all of us

Whatever you’re doing this festive season, everyone at the Neuro Therapy Centre sends their best wishes to you for a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
